What is Dandruff? And How Can You Fix It?

We get it. Clumps of white flakes visible on your favorite black top can be the most annoying sight ever! Dandruff is one of the most common hair problems which can affect adults. There could be a few different reasons that cause the scalp to flake and lead to dandruff; dryness is the most common cause. Other factors include high sebum production, exposure to pollution and harsh chemicals, and in some cases, fungus.

What is Dandruff?

Normally, the scalp sheds dead skin cells every four weeks to maintain its natural moisture. When this process starts happening too fast, the cells clump together leading to visible shedding and flaking. This is commonly known as dandruff.

Ways to Fix Dandruff

For hair that is naturally dry and is frequently exposed to heat and chemical processing, dandruff tends to be a common hair problem. Let’s dive into things you can do to fix dandruff.

1. Keep your scalp moisturized:

The most common cause of dandruff is a dry scalp. Dry hair is more susceptible to dandruff. Keeping your hair’s natural oils intact is very important in fighting dandruff. Stay away from products that cause excessive dryness of the scalp and invest in hair products that lock in the moisture.

    2. Clean Correctly:

Washing your hair too often or too little are both harmful. Regular washing is essential to keep your scalp clean and rid it of dirt, product build-up, and dead skin. However, washing it too often and harshly can strip it off its natural oils and lead to a very dry scalp.

It is also important to use the right hair cleansing products that suit your hair type. Try MegaGrowth Anti-Dandruff Value Pack which comes with three anti-dandruff products and is specially formulated to add moisture to your hair, prevent scalp sensitivities, dandruff flakes, and itchiness.

      3. Reduce Heat Exposure:

Overexposure to heat styling can lead to hair dryness and damage. This becomes even more pronounced in naturally dry hair. Reduce the use of hair dryers, straighteners, and other heat-styling products, especially on wet hair. Air drying is the safest option for kinky or curly hair. However, beware of harshly rubbing a towel against your scalp as this causes cuticle damage and hair breakage. Gently squeeze the water from your hair with a microfiber towel and let your gorgeous hair dry naturally as much as possible!

      4. Control Air Humidity:

If the air inside your house is too dry it may dry up your scalp and cause dandruff. Invest in a humidifier to maintain an optimum moisture level inside your home which has many benefits not only for your hair but also for your skin and health.

      5. Eat Well:

Your hair and scalp need the right nutrition to maintain a healthy pH level and avoid dandruff. To keep your hair follicles healthy, maintain a balanced diet and drink plenty of water. Include healthy fats and proteins, and increase the intake of zinc and biotin in your diet. It is also wise to keep sugar intake at a minimum if you suffer from dandruff.

      6. Massage your Scalp:

Massaging the scalp regularly for 10 to 15 minutes helps in increasing the blood flow to the hair follicles. You can either opt for a dry massage or even use a hair oil that can help in fixing dry hair and fighting dandruff. Hair massage is also a great way to stimulate hair growth.

      7. Manage Stress:

You probably already know the consequences that stress can have on your body. As stress affects the health of your hair too, dandruff could be a side-effect of an overly stressed lifestyle. Stress management should always accompany any external treatments you may follow to cure dandruff and for the overall well-being of your hair, skin, and body.

      8. Seek Medical Help:

If your dandruff is prolonged and does not seem to get better, it could be due to an underlying medical condition. Consult a hair specialist or a trichologist who will be able to diagnose the cause of your dandruff and prescribe a suitable line of treatment. Don’t ignore your dandruff for too long or it may lead to further problems such as shoulder and back acne.

Using the right dandruff products, eating healthy, and taking measures to avoid hair dryness is a good start to curing minor dandruff. However, we highly recommend seeing a medical professional if your dandruff is excessive and persistent even after following the necessary steps.
